SIGN ON: LATINX LEADERS OPPOSE THE NOMINATION OF HECTOR LASALLE AS NEW YORK’S NEXT CHIEF JUDGE
Use this form to sign on to the statement below:

As Latinx leaders we have reviewed and assessed the judicial record of Justice Hector LaSalle and find his nomination to run counter to our values as allies to the labor rights, reproductive health, and immigrant rights movements.

During his time on the bench, Justice LaSalle ruled against labor unions, sided with crisis pregnancy centers (anti-abortion fake clinics), and ruled in favor of the deportation of an immigrant minor.

We cannot stand by his nomination.

Diversity without a focus on equity is not enough. Not every Latinx candidate for higher office is the same. As Latinx leaders we demand that Latinx candidates for higher office demonstrate values and principles that uplift Latinx communities and working class communities. President Biden has admirably appointed federal judges who are both racially and professionally diverse. There is no reason Governor Hochul cannot do the same.

We call on State Senators to stand with the many labor unions, worker rights groups, reproductive justice groups, and advocacy groups that have called attention to this very problematic and harmful nomination.

We have reviewed Justice LaSalle's judicial record and we have seen enough to determine that he is not the best candidate to hold the highest judicial office in New York State. In the face of a United States Supreme Court that is rolling back the rights of diverse communities and is undermining our Democracy, we need a New York State Court of Appeals that will lead and not follow.

We regret that Hector LaSalle is not the best candidate to lead such a court in New York State. We call on the New York State Senate to reject this nomination.

Signed,
